Choosing A New Pet Puppy

If you are deciding whether or not to get a new puppy, there are some factors you should consider first. You want to have a long lasting and happy relationship with any pet dog you introduce to your home. This means you have to be able to cater to their needs and personality.

Suitability With Children In The Home

A young pup takes up a lot of time and energy. Caring young canines takes as much time and effort as young children, and can sometimes be more. If you have both kids and a puppy in the home, they will require contant supervision. You don’t want them hurting each other. Many potential injuries can occur when there are kids and pets under the same roof. These can include pulling, biting and other injuries, so you must be able to prevent this problem.

Many experts including breeders and trainers recommend that if there are toddlers or young children in the house, you should not get toy breeds. There is a high risk of these types of dogs getting dropped, stepped on or squeezed by young children. If you have decided on a toy breed puppy, it is recommended to choose one with an easy going personality.

Protective Characteristics

A dog barking when a strager approaches the door is often enough for dog owners to feel a secure. It’s like having your own home alarm system. Whether it’s a large or small dog, a barking dog is often enough to turn away any would-be intruders. Many breeds are excellent watchdogs. Even smaller breeds like Terriers and Dachshunds act as great watchdogs. Larger, more intinidating dogs are also effective. Their physical size is often enough to deter burglars or unwanted guests. Working or herding dogs are ideal for protecting families because they are easy to train and are highly skilled.

Allocating Time With Your New Pet

Dogs are social animals. This is why they make great pets and excellent companions. Their social nature means you need to be able to allocate sufficient time with this type of pet, especially puppies. Pups need training, supervision and interaction with other canines and humans in order to live healthier and happier lives.

An unfortunate statistic is that the average dog spends 8 hours per day, 5 days a week at home alone. This is suitable for some breeds who can find alternative ways to amuse themselves, but is not ideal for many other breeds.

Online Pet Insurance Tips

Embrace 468x60 Online Pet Insurance Tips

Is your pet dog one of your most trusted companions? If so, you want the best for your pet. Many things in life are unexpected, so taking out a pet insurance policy is a wise move for pet owners. It’s better to be prepared for the worst, than try to deal with these problems when they happen.

It’s now possible to buy veterinary pet insurance cover for your dog or puppy. Dog owners can get health plans for all types of canines. You need to do some initial research. It pays to shop around for pet health insurance. This is no different to finding the best deals for premiums for your home, car and other types of insurance.

Before buying pet insurance, you should ask yourself what the best pet insurance plan is for you and your dog.

1. Does the pet insurance company cover pre existing health issues. It’s important to address this because your pet may get injured or sick as a result of this health condition. If the pet insurer does not cover pre-existing health problems, you might end up paying for this expense. Companies like Embrace Pet Insurance will discuss this with customers before deciding to insure your pet. The younger your pet is, the less you have to worry about this issue because they will have no previous health problems.

2. Make sure the insurance company has a licence to operate in your area. This should be fine, but like any industry, there are dishonest companies who mislead customers.

3. Check to see how long the insurer has been in business. You want to know how long they have been providing dog insurance. Newer companies often lack the experience of more established businesses.

4. Find out what the vet pet insurance policy will not include. Make a list of what you would like included and compare this against what will be insured. Ask the dog insurer how they deal with serious injuries and illnesses and what’s covered. Some will provide customized cover plans.

5. Finally, find out what the deductible bill is going to be, and whether or not there is a cap on certain injuries or illnesses that may occur.

Visiting The Local Dog Parks – 3 Rules Every Dog Owner Should Know

In recent years, many more designated property areas are being built for pets dogs. This is a positive development for pet owners, and should be implemented in each United States city. These parks have become very popular in places like Laurel Canyon and Runyon Park in California, but became overcrowded, resulting in new parks having to be created. Other dogs parks have been created across the state in areas such as Long Beach, Palm Springs, San Diego and Santa Monica, where pet owners can bring their dogs to play and socialize with others.

Those lucky enough to have a dog park located nearby, understand how happy their dogs are when they are running around having fun with other dogs. They have to chance to roam off their leash, play and meet other friendly canines, and make new friends.

The instincts of dogs are somewhat like humans in terms of socialization when they visit dog parks. Dogs like to group together and form packs. They group similar yo the way people often do.  You can even see the smile on their faces as they run from dog to dog meeting each other and forming friendships.

Three Tips For The Dog Owners

Visiting these parkes is fun for both you and your dog. However there are some mistakes some dog owners make when visiting these places.  They sometimes forget to properly balance their dog’s emotional needs while visiting the park.

1. A big mistake many people make is to completely depend on the dog park for fulfilling their dogs emotional needs. Dogs really enjoy these areas and are so enjoyable for the dogs, that many dog owners begin to neglect their pets when they are away from the park.  Its as if the few hours spent at the dog park negates the animal from needing other attention when they are away from the park. This can result in your pet becoming detached from you. This can also cause distress and behavior problems at home.

2. Another mistake dog owners make is to allow their dogs to run loose around these parks and not taking care of them closely enough to avoid problems.  The main problem is that of dominance and aggression towards other animals in the park.  In these places, all of the pets will be energetic and excitable. There is a possibilty your dog could be dominating another fellow canines.  It may seem playful, but it can be quite the opposite. They may actually be in the process of initiating a dog fight.

3. The final problem that often occurs when visiting dog parks with your pet dog is to that they do not include themselves in the activity.  Often, owners go to the park and let their dogs run free while sitting idly by while their dog enjoys themselves. However, it’s important to interact and take care of your dog while at the park. You should ensure that your pet is well behaved. In order to do things you need become more active with your dog rather than just sitting on the bench.  Imagine your dog is your child. You would never take your child to the park and then ignore everything they do while they are there.

Dog Senses: Dogs with ESP?

big yawn 150x150 Dog Senses: Dogs with ESP?Many of us have some stories that we could attribute to ESP or Extra Sensory Perception.  I know on several occasions I’ve thought of an old friend and called them only to get a busy signal because they were trying to call me!  Studies on ESP have indicated that ESP depends on a deep emotional tie between the subjects, or in some cases the dog and the dog owner.  Here are several examples of how dogs have displayed some “extra” dog senses or ESP.

You may have heard stories of dogs at the death of their owners. One of the most famous has to do with Gary Cooper’s three dogs. When Gary was nearing death, the dogs were on guard with a group of reporters outside the bedroom. It was noted that at the precise time of Gary’s passing, all three dogs began to howl and were devastated for quite some time.

Another interesting story is that of a family dog in Virginia named Harry, Harry knew something was not right with his family but had only his veterinarian to tell it to. The vet was taking care of the dog while the family was vacationing in Florida. Harry’s distress and howling was so unusual that the vet recorded the date and time.

When Harry’s family returned from their trip, the vet told them about the dog’s mysterious behavior. The family was shocked. At that specified date, and time, they had been endangered by a flash flood.

Modern day science still has a longs ways to go to fully understand ESP and how it works, although there isn’t much denying that it does exist.  If your dog and you are blessed with this gift, enjoy it and try not to think figure it out, just enjoy the companionship and make the most of it.
